Sarah Espinoza (Class of 2019) won an Alliance of Latinx Theater Artists of Chicago award for Outstanding Sound Design for “The Displaced” at Haven Theatre.
Sundance Film Festival Selection
Xiameng (Summer) Lin (Class of 2017) composed the music for short documentary Stay Close. The film was selected to screen at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.
Podcasting Masterclass
Sarah Geis gave a masterclass on podcasting for Sound Arts and Industries students on November 28, 2018. Geis is an independent radio producer and editor, and a former artistic director of the Third Coast International Audio Festival. She won the Documentary Audio Recognition Award from London-based The Whickers for her piece The Art of Now: Guantanamo.
Archival Sound Workshop
Sound artist Olivia Block gave a workshop to Sound Arts and Industries students November 19, 2018 on archival sound. Block brought archival recordings and samples from her found-sounds collection. She then guided a discussion about how to analyze and frame the experience of listening. Block’s recorded compositions combine field recordings, chamber instruments and electronic textures, and others.
Great Lakes Association for Sound Studies
The Great Lakes Association for Sound Studies (GLASS) convened on October 26, 2018 with keynote speaker and sound studies titan Jonathan Sterne.
Visiting Artist: Trimpin
Trimpin gave an artist talk on October 11, 2019. Trimpin is a sound artist/inventor/engineer/composer whose work integrates sculpture and sound across a variety of media including fixed installation and live music, theater, and dance performance. The night before his artist talk, Trimpin answered student questions at the end of the on-campus screening of Trimpin: The Sound of Invention, which is a 2009 documentary profiling him. Visiting Artist: Brendan Baker
Brendan Baker gave an artist talk on October 8, 2018. Baker is the director for Marvel’s podcast series Wolverine: The Long Night and was previously the producer for the critically acclaimed podcast Love + Radio. You can hear Baker featured in our podcast episode released on March 15, 2019.
