Hobson/Lucas Soundstage

The Hobson/Lucas Soundstage is one of the main facilities of the MA in Sound Arts and Industries program, where our students spend much of their time.

Along with serving as a teaching space, students can reserve the room through an online reservation system to work on recording and other creative projects.

We also use the space for special engagements and speaking events. Past events have included the Spring Symposium and a range of visiting artists.

Soundstage Features
  • Orchestra Ready: The room is wired for 12 speakers and can accommodate an 18-piece orchestra for film scoring.
  • Isolation Booth: The Hobson/Lucas Soundstage includes a noticeably quiet isolation booth that can be used for recording drums, vocals, and other instruments.
  • Foley Pit: The Foley pit is a lowered concrete floor used to add sound to films and television shows in real time. Foley is the real-time reproduction and creation of sound effects for film.
  • Reserve Online: Students can reserve the Hobson/Lucas Soundstage through the online reservation system.

Control Room

The Control Room contains a 48-input SSL analog console with 24 faders, used for recording and mixing in the Hobson/Lucas Soundstage or Control Room. The room also includes a patch bay and a 5.1 surround monitoring setup.

Like the Hobson/Lucas Soundstage, the Control Room also serves as a teaching space for production courses.

Students can reserve the Hobson/Lucas Soundstage and Control Room separately through the online reservation system if they only need one or the other, freeing up the other space for fellow students.

Spatial Mixing Room

The Spatial Mixing Room has the hallmark 7.1.4 speaker arrangement used for Dolby Atmos mixing and playback.

Students can use the room in combination with the Dolby Atmos tools built into modern versions of Pro Tools to explore how object-based sound spatialization works.

Podcast Lab

The Podcast Lab is a smaller version of the Hobson/Lucas Soundstage, designed to be intimate and comfortable while still offering a control room and live room setup.

The room is used for classes, listening sessions, and smaller-scale recording projects that do not require the resources or soundproofing of the Hobson/Lucas Soundstage.

The SoundTank

The SoundTank is a flexible student workspace and program hub that includes the following:

  • Computer Editing Lab: 12 workstations equipped with Pro Tools, Cycling ’74 Max, Ableton, Native Instruments, Adobe Creative Suite, Reaper, Unity, Wwise, and other creative software.
  • Conference Room: A meeting and collaboration space with VR and video games.
  • Semi-Private Workstations: Workstations for focused study and project work.
  • Student Lounge and Patio: A lounge area and outdoor patio for students.
  • Program Event Space: A flexible space used for program events, presentations, and community gatherings.
