Bill Healy is an award-winning journalist who teaches documentary audio at Northwestern. He’s produced two podcasts with the Invisible Institute: You Didn’t See Nothin, winner of the 2024 Pulitzer Prize in Audio Reporting, and Somebody, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer in 2021.
Bill grew up in Chicago’s southwest suburbs, and attended Georgetown University, where he majored in Sociology. Upon graduation, Bill came back to Chicago, and taught fifth grade.
He earned two master’s degrees from Northwestern: in education and in journalism.
For many years Bill edited and produced StoryCorps for Chicago’s public radio station, WBEZ. Over the course of his career he’s worked on stories with NPR, the BBC and This American Life. He is committed to telling stories about inequality in Chicago.
For several years, Bill supported a small but dedicated team of students at Steel City Academy in Gary, Indiana. He helped them create a podcast which drew national attention to a dump being built across the street from their school.
Bill’s work has been recognized with the Third Coast International Audio Festival Award and the IDA Documentary Award. He has taught oral history at the University of Chicago, and regularly teaches documentary audio at Northwestern.
